DISCUSSION: The City of Fort Worth's Code Compliance Department has a need to have durable Mobile Data Computers (MDC) installed in its vehicles. The MDCs will allow Code Compliance employees to do their field work duties in a more efficient manner. On June 14, 2005, (M&C P-10172) the City Council authorized the replacement of MDCs for Police and Municipal Court vehicles. Code Compliance first tested the old MDCs being removed from operation in Police vehicles as a solution to their need. After the test period, it was determined that the operating system and hardware restrictions were impediments, and as result, the old units were not a solution to the need. Code Compliance staff, in conjunction with IT Solutions staff, evaluated the MDC model MW800 devices being installed in the Police and Municipal Court vehicles. After the evaluation was completed, it was determined that these MDC devices would be the solution to the need. The devices will be installed in 64 vehicles and Code will purchase three units as spares to provide backup for possible failed devices. The backup devices allow for a quick exchange process for failed devices. The exchange process will minimize the time a Code Compliance official is not performing regular job duties. Code Compliance will benefit from the discounted pricing offered by Motorola for the June 2005 purchase. The purchase of a same device type also makes it easier for both the vendor and City staff to provide user support. The cost of each installed unit is approximately $5,580.00. The plan is for the MDCs to be installed in vehicles as quickly as scheduling will allow. It is anticipated that the installation could be completed by the end of February. FISCAL INFORMATION/CERTIFICATION: The Finance Director certifies that funds are available in the current operating budget as appropriated, of the Code Compliance Department.
