DISCUSSION: Informal Report No. 7523, Review of Disabled Homestead Exemption Policy, was presented at the April 9 Pre-Council meeting. At that time, the City Council expressed interest in increasing the Disabled Citizen Homestead Exemption from $20,000 to $40,000. The last day the City Council may adopt (or change) the various local option percentage homestead exemptions is May 1, 1991, in order to impact the 1991-92 budget year. Under state law, property owners have until April 30 to apply for the various property tax exemptions offered by the City for the next tax year. Property owners apply for property tax exemptions through the Tarrant Appraisal District. Each December, property owners who have exemptions receive a notice confirming the exemptions. FINANCING: There are no expenditures anticipated from this recommendation. However, it is anticipated the City of Fort Worth will lose an additional $119,000 in property tax revenue, for a cumulative revenue loss of $345,000 on this exemption, as a result of increasing the Disabled Citizen Homestead Exemption from $20,000 to $40,000.
