Adopted Ordinance No.~~~~ DISCUSSION The City has been engaged in economic development activity for some time. How- ever, responsibility for the program has not always been clearly defined. As a result, our efforts have often lacked the kind of coordination and direction necessary to be effective, klost major cities have established an economic development office during the past few years to take advantage of the many oppor- tunities that are available in this area. The staff person who has been most actively involved in economic development is currently located in the Planning Department. In an effort to increase the visibility of this function, the new Economic Development Office will report directly to the City Panager's Office and be responsible for carrying out the proyrams that were outlined in the special report submit~ted~to the City Council on April 10, 1986. The City Manager's staff has met with officials of the Chamber of Commerce to discuss the respective roles of each in economic development activities. There is mutual agreement that there will not be any duplication of efforts. In addi- tion, both have agreed to work together in carrying out certain of the recommen- dations of the Economic Development Task Force that were presented to the City Council by the Fort Worth Action Strategies Committee. During the City Council Retreat an April 18-19, 1986, a proposal to establish an Economic Development Office was discussed. The original proposal has been revised to provide for two staff members instead of three. A senior planner will be transferred from the Planning Department and will serve as the Economic Development Director. A secretary position will be created and will be filled after the office is established.
