City Hanager Closing from Dake
Building Street to Sixth Avenue
Dear Sir:
Attached is a letter dated november 3, 1958, signed by ibr. Clay J. Berry, President of
Harris Hospital, requesting the closing of Gt st Cannon Avenue from Lake Street to Sixth
Avenue, as per plat attached.
Hr. Berry states that Harris Hospital is the owner of all property on both sides of
Cannon Avenue at this location and also the owner of all of block 8 and 9, Sandage
Addition, and that the portion of Cannon Avenue to be closed will be an integral part
of the hospital usage. The letter also states that in consideration of the approval
of the closing, the Harris Hospital will convey to the City of Fort VJorth 17 feet of
additional land for right-of-way along the north side of Cooper Street from Lake Street
to Sixth Avenue and pay to the City of Fort Worth the sum of 53,360 for widening this
part of Cooper Street from a 26 foot roadway to a 40 foot roadway.
There are, at present, two structures that occupy a portion of the 17 foot strip of
land on the north side of Cooper Street that Harris Hospital will raze prior to the
actual closing and use of the closed portion of Cannon Avenue.
The closing of this portion of Cannon Avenue has been under consideration for about
three years after a rather complete study of their request. The Public Works Department
advised these people that would be required before we could recommend the closing. They
have now met these requirements and have so stated in the attached letter. We have
recently checked with all utility companies and with the Traffic Engineer, 1r. T. R.
Buckman, and find no one that opposes the closing. The Water Department has been paid
u40 to adjust a two inch water line. The Lone Star Gas Company states they have no
objection to the closing, but will expect the hospital to bear the cost of rearranging
gas facilities in the block to be closed.
It is thoroughly understood by all that the actual closing of Cannon Avenue from Lake
Street to Sixth Avenue will not take place until Cooper Street over the same limits
has been widened and paved with a 40 foot roadway. Under these circumstances, we
respectfully recommend the closing of Cannon Avenue from Lake Street to Sixth Avenue,
as requested, with the understanding that easements for existing utilities be retained
until cleared by Harris Hospital, and that approval be given for the preparation of the
ordinance, but the actual passage of the closing ordinance be deferred until the work
on Cooper Street has been completed.

Works Department has been checking with the various utility

objection to the closing of the 1300 block of West Cannon

Fort Worth Water Department has no objection to the closing
of the 1300 block of West Cannon Avenue as requested, and
the Hospital has deposited with the Water Department the sum
of $40.00 in order that they may adjust the 2 inch water main
in the 1300 block of West Cannon Avenue.

pectfully requests that this application for the closing of
West Cannon Avenue from Lake Street to Sixth Avenue be approved..
