K AS part of the Fire Department's effort to reduce Acting Pay, it has been
determined that three additional Fire Engineers could be deployed to offset
partially the acting pay requirement at this level.
Past experience has shown that the Fire Department uses at least one fire ~%
engineer on an acting basis every day of the year to fill vacancies created
by vacations, sick leave or other leave experience. Therefore, there is no
change in the financial requirements or overall manpower strength.
Also, this redeployment will allow us to promote two additional minority
firefighters to the Fire Engineer rank prior to the current eligibility
list becoming outdated.
The three (3) additional positions and the deletion of three (3) Firefighter
positions will maintain the current number of budgeted positions and provide
the following classification changes:
PRESENT PROPOSED
5 Deputy Chiefs 5 Deputy Chiefs ,
18 District~Chiefs 18 District Chiefs
81 Captains 81 Captains
90 Lieutenants 90 Lieutenants
156 Engineers 159 Engineers
305.42 Firefighters 302.42 Firefighters
655.42 655.42
Recommendation
It is recommended the attached ordinance be adopted, altering the authorized
strength of the Fire Department, to reflect the addition of three (3) Fire
Engineers and the deletion of three (3) Firefighter positions.
