DISCUSSION:
FitFuture is an aggressive community-wide effort to stop the epidemic of overweight and obesity in Tarrant
County. The City of Fort Worth Public Health Department's Health Promotion & Education section/staff
were tasked with providing an educational event aimed at children and their families through Contract No.
36667, approved by Council February 26, 2008, (M&C G-16065) between the City of Fort Worth and the
United Way of Metropolitan Tarrant County.
With our FitFuture partners (United Way, Fort Worth Independent School District, Tarrant County Public
Health, City of Fort Worth Parks and Community Services Department, the University of North Texas Health
Science Center, and the YMCA), staff are organizing FitFuture KIDS Fest to be held Saturday, October 11,
2008 at Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth. The working budget for FitFuture KIDS Fest is currently
$35,000.00; however, the potential sponsorship is estimated to be up to $50,000.00 with a majority of
the budget being spent on publicity. As the fiscal agent, the Public Health Department is charged with
soliciting funds and sponsorships to pay for this event; this process is ongoing. Funds will be disbursed as
received to purchase needed goods and services for KIDS Fest. The event's costs will not exceed received
donations. It is anticipated that all costs will be incurred by January 30, 2009; however, any unspent
funds should remain in this Special Trust to fund a potential 2009 event.
FitFuture KIDS Fest is a free, fun-filled festival to showcase simple ways families can integrate nutritious
eating and physical activity into their daily lives to reduce overweight and obesity in both children and adult
populations. The 2007 event drew 3,511 participants. More than 200 volunteers and 33 vendors provided
families the opportunity to:
• participate in healthy cooking demonstrations,
• learn how to grow a healthy vegetable garden,
• sample yoga, fencing, karate, gymnastics, dancing,

FISCAL IPIFORMATIOIV/CERTIFICATION:
The Finance Director certifies that upon approval of the above recommendations and adoption of the
attached appropriation ordinance, funds will be available in the current operating budget, as appropriated, of
the Special Trust Fund.
