POLICY PROPOSAL
DATE FILE NUMBER SUBJECT Participation in Sister Cities PAGE 1 OF
5/12/81 CP-83 International Program
PROPOSAL PROPOSED BY: CITY MANAGER'S REVS W
During the past few months,at the suggestion of local businessmen, City staff has
been investigation the possibility of Fort Worth joining the Sister Cities Interna-
tional Organization in order to benefit from its expertise in formulating plans
toward the selection of a sister city or cities.
Background
The Town Affiliation Association of the U. S. , Inc. (Sister Cities International)
began nationally in 1956 to further international cooperation and understanding
through links between cities in the U. S. and other nations.
The Association currently works with nearly 700 U. S. cities with a combined popu-
lation of nearly 60 million persons who are relating to their counterparts in some
80 countries throughout the world.
` A Sister Cities Program, which would involve extensive citizen involvement, helps
foster communications across borders and can include numerous cooperative exchange
programs involving ideas, materials and people in education, government, culture,
economics and social relations.
Currently 24 Texas cities are affiliated with 37 cities throughout the world, and
two of these cities are exploring additional affiliations.
Membership in the association is based on populationF-and the annual dues for the
City of Fort Worth would be $400.
Recommendation
Recognizing the need for better communication between citizens of the world, I
propose that:
1. The City of Fort Worth join the Town Affiliation Association of the U. S. , Inc.
(Sister Cities International) organization; and
2. Staff be directed to develop a program to solicit broad-based representative
citizen involvement in the planning of a Sister City project.
