Newkirk For many months, the proposed expansion of the elevated portion of Interstate 30 at the south end of the Central Business District has been the subject of much debate in Fort Worth. While recognizing the need to address the problems created by the large volume of traffic entering and leaving the downtown area each day through the mixmaster, many respected citizens have questioned whether the plan to expand the overhead from four to seven lanes offers the best long-term solution. Various groups have presented alternatives that should be evaluated carefully before a final decision is made." Recommendation In order to serve the best interests of all the citizens of Fort Worth, I propose that the City Council ask the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation to delay further action on plans for the I-30 downtown expansion and request a thorough study of alternative plans. City Manager's Comments Although this proposal is clearly a policy matter, the staff would suggest that representatives of the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation be asked to address the City Council regarding possible ramifications of the adoption of this proposal.
