POLICY PROPOSAL
DATE FILE NUMBER SUBJECT All-Way Stop Sign Installation - PAGE 1 OF-1
3/29/83 C.P. 101 McPhereson & Waits
PROPOSAL PROPOSED BY: CITY MkNAGER'S REV EW
Herman S t ut e
The citizens of' University Place have requested that the City of Fort Worth
install stop signs on all three approaches of the intersection of McPherson and
Waits. The Traffic Engineer has determined not to install the additional signs
because the use of all way stops under these conditions violates the policy of
the City.
Because there is unanimous support in the neighborhood for such , -gn
installation I would like to recommend that the City Council deviate fror he
City policy on the use of the MUTCD and direct the Traffic Engineer to in€ 1
stop signs on all approaches of the Waits Street and McPherson St: :ei
intersection.
Fiscal Note: The initial costs of installing two additional signs at McPherson
and Waits would be incidental (approximately $200). The signs will have to t
replaced due to deterioration at about 7 year intervals.
City Managers Comments: The Traffic Engineer indicates that the use of all wa,.
stops, particularly at T-intersections such as this one, is not consistent with
the policy of the City to use warrant procedures outlined in the Manual of
Uniform Traffic Control Devises (MUTCD) on the installation of regulator}
signs. In the opinion of the Traffic Engineer and of the MUTCD, the use of all
• way stops to slow down traffic is not a valid use of stop signs.
The City Traffic Engineer has been responsive to the wishes of citizen groups
in that traffic controls have been modified as requested by citizens at o: ner
locations. The City Traffic Engineer, in good conscious, could not grant AF
particular request.
