POLICY PROPOSAL
DATE FILE NUMBER SUBJECT PAGE_AF_
2/24/87 C.P. 127 ."STREETS"
PROPOSAL PROPOSED BY: CITY MANAGER'S REVIEW
SEE BELOW
BACKGROUND
One of the comments we most frequently hear from our citizens is their
continued concern about the rapid and widespread deterioration of our
streets.
According to the Select Street Committee's recommendations, we should be
spending a minimum of $9 million this year on street maintenance. We are
spending $6 million. An additional $1-1/2 million is required just to hold
our own against deterioration.
The extremely wet winter weather has accelerated that deterioration. We feel
that it is imperative that steps be taken to protect the hundreds of millions
of dollars of public investment in our streets.
PROPOSAL
We therefore request that the City Manager develop a program to invest an
additional $5 million this spring and summer to protect our streets from
further deterioration. We further request that the majority of the funds be
used for permanent repairs of potholes, contract seal coating, overlay and
recycling.
Suggested funding: Unappropriated General Fund Balance - $3 million
Capital Projects Reserve Fund - $2 million
TOTAL $5 million
