DISCUSSION: In light of the fact that the City of Fort Worth, through its recent actions, has made clear that its future cultural growth depends on a strong appreciation of its western heritage, the undersigned urge that it is now most appropriate to adopt "Molly"the longhorn as the best symbol of the pride we take in remaining close to our historical roots. The logo of"Molly" should be adopted by the city and used citywide. It shall take the place of the logo previously adopted by the City Council on August 20, 1996. Use of the new logo will occur over the next 18 to 24 months, as current supplies of materials are replenished. In the case of vehicles and off-road equipment, the new symbol will be incorporated as replacement vehicles are purchased. LEGALITY: The City Attorney has reviewed this proposal and finds that it is legal and within the authority of the City Council. CITY MANAGER'S COMMENTS: The City Manager concurs that designating an official logo for the city is within the scope of City Council Authority. Without the benefit of a proposed logo, staff cannot evaluate the costs nor the problems that will be associated with implementing a new logo. The current logo is copyrighted and is the exclusive property of the City of Fort Worth. The longhorn silhouette is public property used extensively by private and public entities throughout Fort Worth and Texas and, in all likelihood, cannot be copyrighted for the exclusive use by the City. The longhorn silhouette has never been the official city logo. Rather, the longhorn silhouette was used as an alternative logo when the official logo was not necessary. Council can elect to retain the current logo and designate the silhouette longhorn as an additional city logo. r A substitute motion was made on CP 210, as follows: It is proposed that the City Council adopt the image of a Fort Worth Longhorn as part of a new official logo of the City of Fort Worth. It is further proposed that a Council committee be appointed by the Mayor by Dec. 17`h to work with the staff to develop a proposed Fort Worth Logo and it's economical phase into service and bring it back to the City Council for adoption in January of 2000. DISCUSSION: The City of Fort Worth and its departments utilize as many as 25 different symbols or logos to identify city services, equipment and personnel. The use of the different symbols makes it difficult for citizens and visitors to instantly know that they are dealing with the city. During the course of a year, graphic experts, city staff and professional experts have reviewed the city's current practices and explored the possibility of a new single logo for the city. The conclusion is that a new single logo should be adopted by the City to be used city-wide. Use of the new logo will occur over the next 18 to 24 months, as current supplies of materials are replenished. In the case of vehicles and off-road equipment, the new logo will be incorporated as replacement vehicles are purchased. The City will retain exclusive rights to the logo, and the City Attorney's Office will file necessary documents to copyright the symbol. 0+0• FISCAL INFORMATION/CERTIFICATION: The Director of Fiscal Services certifies that this policy has no mater ialc nds.
