It is proposed that the City Council:
1. Accept the donation of the Marine School from the Friends of the Marine School, Inc. for
placement and preservation at the Log Cabin Village;and
2. Approve the use of$66,005 in available funds from the Park Improvements Fund to underwrite the
relocation of the Marine School to the Log Cabin Village and the necessary refurbishment of the
school.
DISCUSSION:
The Friends of the Marine School have requested that the City of Fort Worth accept the school as a
donation to be relocated and preserved at the Log Cabin Village. This structure, being a 19`h century
wood plank school, complies with the Village Master Plan, which allows for the ultimate addition of two
historic structures to the site.
M.G. Ellis built the Marine Schoolhouse in 1872 on what is now 20`°and Commerce St. It is the oldest
public building still standing in Fort Worth. In 1906, it was bought by John Mulholland and moved to
1309 N. Commerce where it was used it as a residence until it was condemned by the city in 1991. It was
rescued by the Friends of the Marine School, Inc. and moved to 603 Park St. in Circle Park in 1993.
OW Since that time,no restoration or preservation efforts have been made to the structure.
The cost of moving the Marine School to the Village is estimated to include one-time expenses of
$54,205 for restoration and relocation and $11,800 for lighting, wiring, heating and electricity service.
These one-time expenses total an estimated $66,005. Annual expenses include $1000 for maintenance
and replacement of consumables (chalk, etc.), and $18,500 for two part-time historical interpreters. The
total annual operating budget would be$19,500.
On March 18,2003, the Parks and Community Services Advisory Board endorsed stars recommendation
to the City Council to accept the Marine School from the Friends of the Marine School,Inc. for placement
and preservation at the Log Cabin Village subject to necessary appropriations to relocate, restore and
operate the Schoolhouse.
