It is proposed that the City Council:
Consider approval of an official City flag design that is compatible with the City's official logo.
DISCUSSION:
In 1999, the City Council adopted the longhorn "Molly" logo as the official logo of the City of Fort
Worth. To minimize financial impact on departments, the logo was phased in over several months. As
supplies of letterhead and other materials were depleted, they were replaced with those bearing the new
logo.
The transition to the city's new logo is nearly complete. This proposal addresses a remaining use of the
old logo for city flags. The new design, featuring the longhorn "Molly" logo on a white field, is
attached.
The new flag design should be adopted by the city and used citywide, replacing all previous city flags.
Old flags will be retired by sundown July 3, 2004, to prevent the simultaneous flying of old and new
designs. New flags could be raised July 4, 2004, or later. To minimize financial impact, introduction ofi
new flags may occur over the next 12 to 18 months, as departments are able to allocate funds. City
facilities may fly the city flag as appropriate but are not required to do so.
LEGALITY:
The Law Department finds that this proposal is legal and within the authority of the City Council.
FISCAL NOTE:
The estimated cost to replace all city flags at one time is $10,000 to $12,000. Cost per flag is no more
than $52 for the most-flown size(3'x5')or $200 for the larger size(8'x12').
However, flag replacement may occur over 12 to 18 months allowing departments to fund new flags
from currently budgeted replacement funds or defer costs as needed.
