Authorize the City Manager to initiate a street name change for Arch Adams Street to Van Cliburn Way, from Lancaster Avenue to West 7*Street,and 2. Waive the fee for the application in the amount of S682. DISCUSSION: Resolution 3253-09-2005 allows the City Council to name city facilities after living individuals in limited circumstances. The individual must have made an extraordinary contribution for the betterment of all Fort Worth. It has been proposed that a portion of Arch Adams Street between Lancaster Avenue and West 7's Street be named Van Cliburn Way,as depicted on the attached map. Van Cliburn's victory in the first International Tchaikovsky Competition held in Moscow at the height of the Cold War made him an instant American hero. He has served as an ambassador of American culture and was instrumental in the raising of the iron curtain. Mr.Cliburn has made Fort Worth his home for many years and the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition held here every four years brings world renown to the City.2009 marks the 50*anniversary of the Van Cliburn Foundation Competition. The street is currently named for Major A. G. Adams, a Confederate Army officer. Major Adams fought in many battles and resided in Marshall, Texas after his discharge from the Army. Arch Adams Street is included in a 1928 directory of city street names. The portion of the street located between West 7's Street and Bailey Avenue will remain named Arch Adams Street and appropriately reflect the planned realignment of the street. LEGALITY: The Law Department finds that this proposal is legal and within the authority of the City Council.
