DISCUSSION: Each year, the Criminal Justice Division (CJD) of the Governor's Office funds projects throughout the State of Texas under the State Justice Assistance Grant Program. The Fort Worth Police Department submitted an application for the Fort Worth Police Department K-9 Unit in the amount of$16,000.00 for two canines. The overall goal of this project is to utilize canines as a tool that aids officers in investigations, conducting high-risk searches and the detection of narcotics to efficiently ensure the safety of the citizens of Fort Worth, surrounding cities and communities and officers. Canines are a proven force multiplier in the field, as well as a tool to ensure officer safety. The CJD allows up to two percent of the total award amount to be applied towards indirect costs if the agency does not have a current, approved indirect cost rate. Staff requests that $326.00 of the total award amount be used for indirect costs, if the grant is awarded. The CJD requires that the City adopt a resolution to provide assurances that funds will be returned to the CJD, in full, in the event of loss or misuse of CJD grant funds. The City is also required to designate an official authorized to accept, reject or alter the grant.
