No. 1389 be amended to read as follows:
Chapter 11.
FIRE PROTECTION
Section 11-1.
FIREPROOFING STRUCTURAL NUMBERS.
Paragraph 11-1-5. Fireproofing Materials.
In buildings of First-Class and Second-Class "A"
Construction, every metal structural member which supports.
loads or resists stresses shall be fireproofed to have a
fire resistance rating as follows:
Beams and girders supporting columns, masonry or
reinforced concrete halls shall have a fire resistance
rating of not less than four (4) hours. Other beams and
girders shall have a fire resistance rating of not less
than three (3) hours.
Beams and girders shall be individually protected
in a manner to give the required fire resistance rating;
except that beams may be protected by a fire resisting ceil-
ing of such construction that the fire resistance rating of
the floor and ceiling assembly, or roof and ceiling assembly
will be not less than three (3) hours, provided the space
above the ceiling is fire-stopped with noncombustible material
to form areas of not more than 2000 square feet.
Trusses supporting columns or masonry or reinforced
concrete walls shall be individually protected by noncombus-
tible construction having a fire resistance rating of not
less than four (4) hours. Other trusses shall be protected
by construction having a fire resistance rating of not less
than three (3) hours; except that trusses which support only
roof loads and ceilings over floor areas having a clear
height not less than twenty-five (25) feet below the lower
chords of the truss may be protected by a ceiling of noncom-
bustible construction having a fire resistance rating of not
less than one (1) hour.
Columns shall have a fire resistance rating of
not less than four (4) hours, and all spaces between the
required fireproofing and the member protected shall be
fire-stopped at each floor level. Where fireproofing of
columns is exposed to damage from trucking or handling of
merchandise, it shall be jacketed for a height of five (51
feet from the floor with a substantial cover or provided with
wheel guards.
The floor and roof construction shall have a fire
resistance rating of not less than three (3) hours. Floor
and roof slab in reinforced concrete construction, other
than slab supported on joists, shall be at least four (4)
inches thick.
Every metal structural member which supports loads
or resists stresses in that portion of the building which
is below the street or ground grade floor construction shall
be protected by encasing completely with a poured in place fire-
proofing material of a durable quality equal to concrete having
coarse aggregate limestone or calcareous gravel to provide a
fire resistance rating of four (4) hours. This type of fire-
proofing shall also be used in damp places where metal may be
subjected to rapid deterioration, and on columns on street or
ground floor of Type 3 (Business buildings).
'Where a ceiling is used to fire protect supporting
structural members of a floor or roof construction, such
ceiling shall be continuous, but may have openings for non-
combustible pipe ducts and electrical outlets, provided that
the areas of such ducts and outlets opening through the ceil-
ing aggregate not more than 100 square inches per 100 square
feet of ceiling area. The ceiling shall be made continuous
around recessed lighting fixtures, and openings for large heat-
ing, cooling or ventilating ducts shall be protected by fire
shutters operated with fuseable links.
The fire resistance rating of various fireproofing
materials and constructions shall be the same as the rating
established by standard fire tests conducted in accord with the
"Standard Methods of Fire Tests of Building Construction and
Materials," ASTM E119-47 and listed in Appendix "A," 1949 edi-
tion of the "National Building Code," promulgated by the
National Board of Fire Underwriters, or as established by fire
resistance reports, Nos. R-3187-1. R-3187-3, !R-2993, R-29942
R-2993 (supplement), R-2851 and 8-2773, of Underwriters Labora-
