ADOPTING THE AGE-FRIENDLY FORT WORTH ACTION PLAN AND
INCORPORATING BY REFERENCE IN THE COMPREHENSIVE PLAN
WHEREAS in September 2014 the City of Fort Worth joined the national AARP Network of
Age-Friendly Communities and has since supported a two-year community effort to prepare an Age-
Friendly Action Plan; and
WHEREAS the World Health Organization's Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities and
Communities has identified eight domains of livability that influence the quality of life of older adults,
and the proposed Age-Friendly Fort Worth Action Plan is organized according to these domains and
contains action items for the next three to five years; and
WHEREAS staff and volunteers from AARP, the City of Fort Worth, the United Way, and other
community partners prepared the draft plan and released it for public comment at public forums and
stakeholder meetings in October 2016; and
WHEREAS the plan is consistent with current City policies and initiatives, and is intended to be
implemented with existing staff and budgets; and
WHEREAS on November 18, 2016 the City Plan Commission voted to recommend adoption of
the Age-Friendly Fort Worth Action Plan and to incorporate it by reference in the Comprehensive Plan;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF FORT WORTH, TEXAS, THAT:
The Age-Friendly Fort Worth Action Plan, attached to this Resolution as Exhibit
A, is hereby adopted and shall be incorporated into the Comprehensive Plan by
reference.

Summary of Age-Friendly Fort Worth Action Plan
The plan contains action items corresponding to the following domains of livability and community goals.
Domain 1:Outdoor Spaces and Buildings
Goals: Increase access to and accessibility of parks, open spaces,and public buildings.
Provide a senior center of excellence.
Expand neighborhood watch programs.
Domain 2:Transportation
Goals: Ensure all modes of transportation are safe, affordable,and accessible for people of all ages and abilities.
Provide residents with information and tools to make informed and safe travel choices.
Provide sidewalks or trails to and within parks that are safe and accessible.
Domain 3: Housing
Goals: Streamline,expand and promote programs that support affordable housing and aging in place.
Promote development of diverse and affordable housing options.
Domain 4:Social Participation
Goals: Strengthen recreation, leisure, and educational activities targeting older adults.
Create a City interagency committee to optimize facilities for senior engagement.
Domain 5:Respect and Social Inclusion
Goals: Expand programs and services that engage and empower older adults.
Create intergenerational opportunities for seniors.
Expand awareness of and access to services for older adults in diverse communities.
Domain 6:Civic Participation and Employment
Goals: Increase employment, entrepreneurial,and volunteer opportunities for residents age 50+and people with
disabilities of any age.
Strengthen, develop, and promote volunteerism and civic participation among persons age 50+.
Encourage public and private employers to develop or update human resource policies to address needs of
50+community and those who are caregivers.
Domain 7:Communication and Information
Goals: Create an online portal for information about issues and interests related to older adults.
Increase public awareness about senior issues and perspectives.
Promote awareness about accessible technology and its role in keeping older adults connected to their
community,friends, and family.
Provide age-friendly best practices and information to City customer service departments.
Domain 8:Community Support and Health Services
Goals: Increase consumer awareness of and access to preventative, primary, urgent, and long term care.
Promote safety,wellness, livability,and activity in the community.
Sustain and enhance investment in affordable,accessible, and holistic care for older adults.
Ensure culturally and linguistically responsive supports and services for older adults.
Provide information, education,and training for emergency preparedness of seniors.
Improve prevention and detection of financial exploitation, neglect, and abuse of seniors.
