A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING AND ENDORSING NOMINATION OF A
PORTION OF THE FORT WORTH BOTANIC GARDEN TO THE NATIONAL
REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES
WHEREAS, historic preservation is an effective tool for revrtahzmg neighborhoods, fostering
local pride, and maintaining community character while enhancing overall hvabilrty• and,
WHEREAS, May has been designated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as
National Preservation Month 2008 with a theme of This Place Matters" and
WHEREAS the Fort Worth Botanic Garden is a place that matters to thousands of Fort Worth
and Tarrant County residents who come to the garden for inspiration, knowledge and enjoyment; and
WHEREAS, that portion of the Fort Worth Botanic Garden designed by Hare and Hare of
Kansas Crty which roughly consists of the original Rock Springs Park (1929-1935) and the Horseshoe
(ca. 1954), is being nominated to the National Register of Historic Places as an excellent example of a
designed landscape and as the first municipal botanic garden established in the State of Texas with the
municipal rose garden cited as an outstanding feature of the garden, and
WHEREAS m celebration of National Preservation Month, the Fort Worth Crty Council wishes
to support and endorse the nomination of the Fort Worth Botanic Garden to the National Register of
Historic Places sponsored by the Fort Worth Botanical Society the Fort Worth Garden Club, the Garden
Club Council of Fort Worth and Texas Garden Clubs,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
FORT WORTH, TEXAS, THAT
The City of Fort Worth supports and endorses the nomination of the described portion of the Fort
Worth Botanic Garden to the National Register of Historic Places.

RECOMMENDATION•
It is recommended that the City Council adopt the attached resolution supporting and endorsing nomination
of a portion of the Fort Worth Botanic Garden to the National Register of Historic Places
DISCUSSION
The 109-acre Fort Worth Botanic Garden the oldest botanic garden in Texas Located in the Cultural
District, the Garden is home to over 2 500 species of native and exotic plants that flourish in its 23 specialty
gardens
The portion that is being recommended to the National Register of Historic Places was designed by Hare
and Hare of Kansas City which roughly consists of the original Rock Springs Park (1929-1935) and the
Horseshoe (c 1954) These areas serve as an excellent example of a designed landscape and as the first
municipal botanic garden established in the State of Texas
Benefits of National Register listing includes
Prestigious honor recognizes the Botanic Garden s importance to Fort Worth s and Texas history
Provides limited protection from federally-funded actions that might threaten the property
Makes Botanic Garden eligible for grants as appropriate
Promotes Heritage Tourism and
Places no restriction on use or ability to make changes unless federal funds are involved
The .Fort Worth Botanic Garden is a City=wide facility and is located in COUNCIL DISTRICT 7
