NOMINATING A PORTION OF THE ROSEDALE PARK AND CARVER HEIGHTS ADDITIONS,
AS DESCRIBED HEREIN
FOR DESIGNATION AS A HISTORIC AND CULTURAL LANDMARK {HC) DISTRICT
WHEREAS, a portion of the Rosedale Park Addition and the Carver Heights Additian known as
'Historic Carver Heights, is bounded roughly by Stalcup Road on the west, East Rosedale Street on
the north South Cravens Road on the east, and Ramey Street on the south and is depicted an the
map at Attachment A,
WHEREAS Historic Carver Heights constitutes a collection of intact mid-century ranch style
houses within a neighborhood developed by families as the first contemporary middle class
neighborhood for blacks
WHEREAS, Historic Carver Heights is home to the historically African-American school
Rosedale Park Elementary also known as Maudrie M. Walton Elemen#ary School located at 5816
Rickenbacker Place, designed in 1957 by Wyatt C Hedrick and featuring International style
architecture,
WHEREAS Historic Carver Heights is home to many living legends in Fort Worth, including
Walter B Barbour the first black Fort Warth City Council woman, Reby Cary the first black Fort Worth
Independent School District board trustee of District 3 and the first black State Representative for
District 95 Bert C Williams the first black Mayor Pro Tem and Judge Clifford Davis the first black
elected judge in Fort Worth,
WHEREAS, Historic Carver Heights celebrates the pivotal role of the African American
professions{ neighborhood in the development of Fort Worth's culture and heritage by being the first
neighborhood developed by black families for black families, and
WHEREAS, the Fort Worth City Council would like to consider this district for designation as a
Historic and Cultural Landmark (HC) District;
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE FORT WORTH CITY COUNCIL.
That the City Council nominates Historic Carver Heights for designation as a Historic and
Cultural Landmark (HC) District and requests the City's Historic Preservation Officer to prepare an
appropriate application for public hearings to be conducted by the Historical and Cultural Landmarks
Commission, the Zoning Commission, and the City Council.
