SUPPORTING THE PLACEMENT OF MEMORIAL SIGNAGE ALONG THE MARTIN
LUTHER KING FREEWAY IN FORT WORTH, TEXAS, IN P[ONOR OF DR MARTIN
LUTHER KING, JR.
WHEREAS, in his short life, Dr Martin Luther King, Jr was instrumental in helping us realize
and recttifiy those unspeakable flaws which were tarnishing the name of America; and
WHEREAS, Dr Martin Luther King, Jr used tactics of protest involving non-violent passive
resistance to racial injustice; and
WHEREAS, Dr Martin Luther King, Jr provided a candle along wkth a light, providing this
nation with a road map so that all people could locate and share together in the abundance of this great
democracy He conducted the struggle for civil rights on the high plain of dignity and
WHEREAS, today Black Americans have federal legislation which provides access and legal
protection in the areas of public accommodations, housing, voting rights, schools and transportation.
These rights were not easily won, nor readily accepted, but the goodwill and conscience of an enormous
spectrum of our society whether Black, Brown, Red, Yellow or White, said "Move On," and
WHEREAS, Dr Martin Luther King, Jr won the Nobel Peace Prize for his leadership of the
civil-rights movement and his commitment to nonviolence; and
WHEREAS, on November 3 1981, the Fort Worth City Council adopted Ordinance Na 8456
renaming the Poly Freeway to the Martin Luther King Freeway at the request of the Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority Inc.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF FORT WORTH, TEXAS
That the City Council hereby urges the Texas Department of Transportation to place
appropriate memorial signage designating the portion of US 287 from the south
right-of way line of the Missouri Pacific Railroad south to the intersection of Loop
820 South in Fort Worth, Texas, as the Martin Luther King, 3r Freeway
Adopted this 19th day of December 2006
