RESOLUTION
,^ WHEREAS, the Legislature of the State of Texas is considering
the adoption of Senate Bill 724, relating to the working hours for
firemen;
AND WHEREAS this legislation, if adopted would require the
City of Fort Worth to reduce the current working hours of our firemen
from the existing 56 hour per week schedule to 52 hours in 1976, 48 hours
in 1978 and 42 hours in 1982;
AND WHEREAS S. B. 724 would also possibly restrict the effective
operation of the Fire Department by requiring the firemen to approve, by
majority vote, any change in the duration of shifts from the working
schedule in effect on January 1, 1973;
AND WHEREAS implementation of this reduced work week would place
additional financial burden upon the City by eventually requiring the
employment of one-third additional firemen to provide the same fire protec-
tion that is being provided currently;
AND WHEREAS the employment of these additional firemen to comply
with the 42 hour work schedule would cause additional cost to the City in
excess of $2,000,000 annually at current pay rates;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of
Fort Worth, states its opposition to this proposed legislation, and urges
the elected Representatives and Senators to vote to defeat this bill.
