HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 2927A Resolution No aq~~ SUPPORTING THE NATIONAL SCENICBYWAYS PROGRAM WHEREAS, the U S Department of Transportation established the National Scenic Byways program in 1991 under the Bush administration and WHEREAS, under the program the U S Secretary of Transportation recognizes certain roads as National Scenic Byways based on the historical natural and scenic qualities and there are currently 75 National Scenic Byways in 39 states and WHEREAS, the program is designed to preserve and protect the Nation s scenic byways and promote tourism and economic development and as such the Department of Transportation makes approximately $25 million available for enhancing and promoting byways and WHEREAS, participation in the program is voluntary and is contingent on state and local involvement and participation in the program will allow some of Texas federal tax dollars to return to the State rather than being funneled to other states and WHEREAS, research has shown that designated Scenic Byways generate between $30 000 and $40 000 per mile annually in tourism dollars and 76% of travelers would prefer to take the more interesting route rather than the quickest route and WHEREAS Texas inclusion on the National Scenic Byways map website and other publications would alert a greater audience to Texas heritage and to the scenic diversity found in Texas and would yield recreation monies from outside the state and WHEREAS, there are roadways in and near the City of Fort Worth that are either aesthetically culturally archeologically recreationally or historically significant that should be considered for designation as scenic byways. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT WORTH That the City Council recognizes that Texas is conspicuously absent from the national byway map and That City Council supports the passage of legislation authorizing Texas to join the National Scenic Byways Program Adopted this ~ day of March 2003 A B
