SUPPORTING THE NATIONAL SCENICBYWAYS PROGRAM
WHEREAS, the U S Department of Transportation established the National
Scenic Byways program in 1991 under the Bush administration and
WHEREAS, under the program the U S Secretary of Transportation recognizes
certain roads as National Scenic Byways based on the historical natural and scenic
qualities and there are currently 75 National Scenic Byways in 39 states and
WHEREAS, the program is designed to preserve and protect the Nation s scenic
byways and promote tourism and economic development and as such the
Department of Transportation makes approximately $25 million available for
enhancing and promoting byways and
WHEREAS, participation in the program is voluntary and is contingent on state
and local involvement and participation in the program will allow some of Texas
federal tax dollars to return to the State rather than being funneled to other states
and
WHEREAS, research has shown that designated Scenic Byways generate
between $30 000 and $40 000 per mile annually in tourism dollars and 76% of
travelers would prefer to take the more interesting route rather than the quickest
route and
WHEREAS Texas inclusion on the National Scenic Byways map website and
other publications would alert a greater audience to Texas heritage and to the
scenic diversity found in Texas and would yield recreation monies from outside the
state and
WHEREAS, there are roadways in and near the City of Fort Worth that are either
aesthetically culturally archeologically recreationally or historically significant that should be
considered for designation as scenic byways.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
FORT WORTH
That the City Council recognizes that Texas is conspicuously absent from the
national byway map and
That City Council supports the passage of legislation authorizing Texas to join the
National Scenic Byways Program
