HomeMy WebLinkAboutIR 10026 INFORMAL REPORT TO CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS No. 10026 To the Mayor and Members of the City Council June 20, 2017 h�T�i7 Page 1 of 2 �i {i7 Y *a SUBJECT: UPDATE ON MCLELAND TENNIS CENTER OPERATIONS #qrF rn 10,?5 The purpose of this Informal Report is to provide an update on the programs and operations provided by Lifetime Tennis at McLeland Tennis Center under the contract authorized by the City Council on August 9, 2016 (M&C C-27791). Lifetime Tennis assumed operations of the McLeland Tennis Center effective September 1 , 2016. The contract requires an annual payment (quarterly installments) in the amount of$25,000 as well as $5,000 payment to a capital fund to reinvest into the tennis facility. The capital fund payment increases by $1,000 each year during the five (5) year primary term of the contract. Capital improvements completed in Year One include remodeling of the tennis pro shop, inclusive of new flooring and lighting, counter renovations and painting. The shop is fully stocked with merchandise including apparel, rackets, balls and shoes. The center is open to the public 97 hours per week; 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Sunday. The facility provides open tennis drills, beginner and adult clinics, junior programs and individual lessons. In the first six months of operation Lifetime Tennis offered 897 clinics/drills resulting in 6,503 attendees. In addition there were 230 private lessons provided. The fee for the popular noon and afternoon drills remained at $10 per player, the amount which Lifetime Tennis agreed to retain for the first full year of operations. A variety of group lesson options continue to be offered at similar rates as during prior management. Program highlights and hosting's throughout the first six months include: 1. Grand Opening event held in October with over 400 participants including food, music, giveaways and tennis racquet demo by Wilson Sporting Goods 2. Irving Tennis Classic Wild Card Qualifier February 2017 3. Awarded bids to host two Mid Cities Events in March and May 4. Field Day for Rosemont Elementary school with over 80 kids 5. Three (3) South Hills High School tournaments with over 300 participants 6. Junior Team Tennis with more than 250 participants from community centers and USTA training for community center programmers 7. Black Friday Party in November (40 participants) and Ugly Sweater Holiday Party in December (52 participants) 8. End of the Season Party for the soccer players in Rosemont Park (60 soccer players playing tennis for the first time) 9. Reached out to 3 different elementary schools (Daggett Montessori, Alice Contreras and Westcliff) and taught every P.E. class for free. Over 1,500 students received the opportunity to play for the first time. Also, a free "3 tennis classes" coupon was handed to over 2,000 students so they can use them at McLeland Tennis Center. The following summerjunior program activities encompass: 1 . Junior camps June 5 through August 25, ages 7 to 16 2. Junior evening classes, ages 3 to 10 3. Little Tots Tennis, ages 4 to 6 4. Junior tennis program, ages 11 to 18 consisting of Pre-junior Development, Junior Development Intermediate and Junior Development High Performance sessions Future adult events planned at McLeland Tennis Center include: Wimbledon Mixer, Hawaiian Night End of Summer Party, US Open Mixer, Halloween Party, Black Friday Drills, Ugly Christmas Sweater as well as a Christmas Party for juniors.
