HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 2895.- A Resolution NO ~U !S ~ 7~~'-~' j4 i A RESOLUTION DESIGNATING "HYDE PARK" AS THE OFFICIAL NAME FOR THE PROPOSED TRANSIT ORIENTED CIVIC SQUARE AT THE INTERSECTION OF NINTH AND THROCKMORTON STREETS WHEREAS Hyde Park located at the intersection of Ninth and Throckmorton Streets in Downtown Fort Worth, was named in honor of John Hansford Hyde and Polly Strother Gray Hyde the parents of Sarah Gray Hyde Jennings who dedicated the park to the City of Fort Worth m 1873 and WHEREAS Hyde Park as Fort Worth s oldest park has played a significant civic role in the history of Downtown, having served as a public square at the end of the nineteenth century and as the location of two central library buildings throughout most of the twentieth century and WHEREAS the existing Hyde Park is a small section of the original park, and this triangular public space adjacent to the Flatiron and Park Central Hotel buildings is the location of a marble panther fountain generously dedicated to the City of Fort Worth by the Cravens family on June 26 2002 and WHEREAS the City of Fort Worth, the Fort Worth Transportation Authority the U S General Services Administration and Downtown Fort Worth, Inc are working together to reestablish the area surrounding the intersection of Ninth and Throckmorton Streets as an active and multifunctional public space and WHEREAS this reestablished public space will become a civic square that serves as a gathering place and, through its function as a bus transfer location and a shared stop on the east west and north south lines of the proposed light rail streetcar system will play a vital role in Fort Worth s expanding transit system and WHEREAS the historic name `Hyde Park is appropriate not only as a name for the remaining section of the original park, but also as a general title for the collection of exis~ng and proposed public spaces that together will constitute the civic square at Ninth and Throckmorton Streets and ~ ~ ~~ WHEREAS using `Hyde Park as a general name for the proposed civic square and transit plaza surrounding Ninth and Throckmorton Streets does not preclude distinct public spaces within the area, such as Federal Plaza and John Peter Smith Park, from retaining individual identities in recognition of their unique character function and history and WHEREAS this designation is in honor of the original gift of Sarah Gray Hyde Jennings and the continuing contributions of her family to the community life of Fort Worth NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT WORTH, TEXAS To designate `Hyde Park" as the official name for the proposed transit oriented civic square surrounding the intersection of Ninth and Throckmorton Streets ~~~ ~~~~ ADOPTED this day of , 2002 C~. ~c~.
