HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 2625A Resolution URGING THE TEXAS LEGISLATURE TO CONSIDER CERTAIN FACTORS WHEN CONSIDERATION IS GIVEN TO THE REDISTRICTING OF LEGISLATIVE AND CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICTS THAT IMPACT THE REPRESENTATION OF FORT WORTH RESIDENTS WHEREAS, m the next legislative session that begins m January 2001 the members of the Texas Legislature will consider the redistricting of state legislative and congressional districts and WHEREAS, this process will determine the boundaries by which our state senators state representatives and our congressional representatives will be elected from and WHEREAS, the Senate Committee and the House Committee on Redistricting are holding Joint hearings statewide and seeking testimony that will be considered by the legislature m drawing and analyzing future redistricting plans and WHEREAS, the redistricting process is important to the City of Fort Worth and to the citizens of the City as this process plays a mator part m determining whether or not our area s concerns are considered in Austin and m Washington and WHEREAS, as the City grows and becomes more diverse the needs of the City and its citizens will continue to grow and will require adequate representation at all levels of government and WHEREAS, in order to insure that proper representation is attained for the City of Fort Worth which is protected to have a population of over 500 000 after the next census it is vital that the City Council express its concerns on the redistricting process before the respective committees of the Legislature NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT WORTH, That the City Council strongly urges the members of the Texas Legislature and the respective Committees on Redistncting to consider to the extent possible 1 providing for a redistricting plan of state and federal districts m Fort Worth that contribute to a sense of community by recognizing the existence of our neighborhoods natural boundaries and other common factors such as the demographic and socioeconomic areas in our City and 2 providing for at least two or more congressional seats where Fort Worth residents can compete as candidates for the seat andJor influence by their votes the outcome of the election of the member of Congress from these seats and 3 providing for at least two or more state senate seats where Fort Worth residents can compete as candidates for the seat and/or influence by their votes the outcome of the election of the member of the Texas Senate from these seats and 4 providing for at least five or more state representative seats where Fort Worth residents can compete as candidates for the seat and/or influence by their votes the outcome of the election of the member of the Texas House of Representatives from these seats and 5 that m Fort Worth which has a substantial minority population that is fairly concentrated in those districts that are currently drawn with a high percentage of minorities (50% or more) that these districts should be strengthened to allow Fort Worth minority residents to compete as candidates for the seat and/or influence by their votes the outcome of the election of the member from the respective seat and 6 providing Fort Worth with the maximum number of state legislative and federal congressional seats to provide for appropriate representation for a city of over half a million m population Adopted this l lth day of April 2000 K~ovF~ CITY COUNCIL APR 1 7.000 ,~ ~~~., City Secretary of the City of fort Worth, ?e~cas
