Pylon signs are multi-tenant signs for unified commercial or industrial development, with a maximum height of 25 feet. Monument signs, which are allowed for all development, have a maximum height of eight (8) feet. Pylon signs are allowed in order to reduce the number of monument signs that would be allowed for individual businesses in the same development. Councilmember Moon has requested a maximum height of 16 feet for pylon signs when fronting an arterial, rather than a freeway. Of the 23 developments in Fort Worth with pylon signs on arterials, 19 have signs that are greater than 16 feet, with most at 25 feet. Below are maximum heights for similar signs in other Texas cities. Existing or approved signs under a Unified Sign Agreement would be grandfathered to the maximum 25 foot height. ISSUED BY THE CITY MANAGER FORT WORTH, TEXAS INFORMAL REPORT TO CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS No. 10086 To the Mayor and Members of the City Council January 9, 2018 P5;Tk$q 0EV o Page 2 of 2 SUBJECT: REGULATIONS FOR PYLON SIGNS 1675 In addition, pylon signs and other detached signs are required to have a minimum of 25% of the sign face, excluding the base, contain non-advertised message area. The non-advertised message area must be of construction materials similar to the building and not be illuminated. The intent is to frame the sign face, but some businesses have created signs with a blank band at the bottom of the sign, above the base, to meet the 25% requirement. Staff recommends requiring that the non-advertised message area frame the sign, as intended. Staff will seek comments on the proposed changes from sign companies, the Real Estate Council of Greater Fort Worth, the Development Advisory Committee, Scenic Fort Worth, neighborhood leaders, and other stakeholders. Staff anticipates providing an Informal Report in February 2018 with a summary of public comments and next steps.
