HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 1903f, - A Resoluti IN SUPPORT OF LOCAL, STATE AND FEDERAL INQUIRIES INTO THE POSSIBLE CIVIL RIGHTS VIOLATIONS IN THE DONALD THOMAS HATE CRIME MURDER CASE WHEREAS, numerous Fort Worth citizens have expressed concern that _ a jury sentence granting probation to Christopher William Brosky who was convicted of the hate crime murder of Donald Thomas was not commensurate with the crime; and, WHEREAS, citizens have organized peaceful demonstrations to express their concerns, have made passionate appeals to various legislative and judicial bodies to address their concerns and to strengthen laws dealing with hate crimes and have called on all concerned citizens to join this effort; and, WHEREAS, U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno and Texas Attorney General Dan Morales have directed their respective offices to become involved in this case to determine if additional charges, based on the violation of Donald Thomas' civil rights, should be pursued against Christopher William Brosky, whose probated sentence has raised the concerns expressed recently; and, WHEREAS, Tarrant County District Attorney Tim Curry has begun efforts to bring additional charges of organized criminal action against defendant Brosky for his actions against Mr. Thomas; and, WHEREAS, because the residents of Fort Worth and Tarrant County are diverse, it is paramount that the justice system treat all residents equally, regardless of race, creed or religion, ~~ ~, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF FORT WORTH, TEXAS, joins citizens in expressing its strong support for equal justice for all, regardless of race, creed or religion; CITY OF FORT WOR'T'H AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the City Council urges the U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno and Texas Attorney General Dan Morales to initiate appropriate investigations and actions at their respective levels to insure justice prevails and that Tarrant County District Attorney Tirn Curry also be urged to vigorously carry forward his efforts; AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City Council supports and urges the Texas legislation to immediately enact into law pending legislation which would strengthen hate crime laws and ask the U.S. Congress to consider similar federal legislation; -AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the City Council directs the City Secretary to forward copies of this resolution to U.S. Attorney General Reno and Attorney General Morales and to Tarrant County's state and federal representatives.
