A Resolution
R~$QLUTION NQ.
IN SUPPORT OF THE
NORTH AMERICAN FREE TRADE AGREEMENT (NAFTA)
WHEREAS, the United States Congress is currently considering legislation
implementing the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with a vote
expected in November; and
WHEREAS, NAFTA is a trade agreement that will cover every aspect of trade
between the United States, Canada, and Mexico, including side agreements on labor,
the environment and import surges; and
WHEREAS, NAFTA will also provide the foundation for the creation of the
biggest free trade market in the world with a 56.5 trillion economy and a population
of 370 million people; and
WHEREAS, the creation of jobs for the American people, for Texans and for the
residents of Fort Worth is considered a top priority in providing our citizens the means
by which to succeed and care for their families; and
WHEREAS, NAFTA is expected to positively impact the number of jobs in the
United States with reports by the U.S. Trade Commissioner's office estimating that
the passage of this trade agreement will add as many as 200,000 new jobs in this
country during the next two years; and
WHEREAS, Texas, by virtue of its position as a major trade center and its
proximity with and long-standing business and cultural links with Mexico, is expected
to experience the most beneficial affects by the passage of NAFTA with a possible
doubling of trade with Mexico from the current S20 billion a year to S40 billion in the
year 2000, which will mean additional jobs related to trade; and
WHEREAS, the Fort Worth-Dallas area will also experience positive job growth
with over 75,000 new jobs projected over the next ten years as a result of the
continued involvement and growth in trade because of North Texas' transportation,
financial, service and manufacturing infrastructure; and
WHEREAS, NAFTA will lift the trade barriers over the next 15 years that are
currently in place by the three signatory governments, the United States, Canada, and
Mexico, allowing for more export opportunities for American companies with our
neighboring countries and providing a positive framework for managing the inevitable
trend toward North American economic integration;
