The purpose of this Informal Report is to describe a proposed text amendment that reflects a compromise based on stakeholder comments. Pylon signs are multi-tenant signs for unified commercial or industrial development, with a maximum height of 25 feet with a 17-foot setback. Monument signs, which are allowed for all development, have a maximum height of eight (8) feet. Staff shared the January 2018 proposal to reduce the maximum height of pylon signs from 25 feet to 16 feet with various stakeholders. Sign companies and developer representatives expressed concern about lowering the height. The North Fort Worth Alliance and Scenic Fort Worth members expressed support. The Development Advisory Committee (DAC) discussed the regulations and options at their March 22 and April 19 meetings and reached a compromise on size and design, described below. The proposed text amendment would: • Reduce the maximum height from 25 feet to 20 feet, • Reduce the maximum width from 16 feet to 12 feet, • Reduce the maximum message area from 300 square feet to 200 square feet, and • Clarify that the required non-message area must be clearly distinct from the sign face and provide a vertical framing element to the sign. Unless directed otherwise, staff will work with the Law Department to prepare a text amendment to be heard by the Zoning Commission on July 11 and by the City Council on August 7. Existing or approved signs at 25 feet under a Unified Sign Agreement would be grandfathered.
