COUNCIL ACTION: Approved on 9/19/2006

LOG NAME: 35BETHLEHEM
REFERENCE NO.: *C-21691
SUBJECT:
Authorize Execution of an Amendment to City Secretary Contract No. 32526 with United Community
Center, Inc., to Continue the Operation of a Safe Haven Program at the Bethlehem Community
Center
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the City Council authorize the City Manager to execute a contract amendment for
$126,616.00 with United Community Centers, Inc., to extend the term of the agreement to FY2006-2007 to
continue operation of the Safe Haven Program at the Bethlehem Community Center.
DISCUSSION:
The Safe Haven Program began in 1992 as part of the Weed and Seed Grant, which expired September
30, 2000. Safe Havens are places for children in targeted neighborhoods to play and learn with other
children without fear of being a victim of crime.
United Community Center, Inc., provides a Safe Haven Program for youth living within a five mile radius of
the Bethlehem Community Center located at 970 East Humbolt. The services provided consist of
recreational, athletic, cultural enrichment, educational enhancement, as well as substance abuse prevention
activities.
On September 27, 2005, (M&C C-21027) the City Council authorized the City Manager to execute City
Secretary Contract No. 32526 with the United Community Center, Inc., for operation of the Safe Haven
Program with funding of $126,616.00 for FY2005-2006. This Mayor and Council Communication authorizes
the amendment of that contract to extend the existing contract terms to FY2006-2007. Funding in the
amount of $126,616.00 has been allocated annually in the Crime Control and Prevention District (CCPD)
budget since FY2005-2006 and continues in FY2006-2007.
The Bethlehem Community Center is located in COUNCIL DISTRICT 8.
FISCAL INFORMATION/CERTIFICATION:
The Finance Director certifies that funds are available in the FY2006-2007 operating budget, as
appropriated, of the Crime Control and Prevention District Fund.
