HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 3987-05-2011A Resolution NO. 3987 -05 -2011 CANVASSING THE RETURNS AND DECLARING THE RESULTS OF THE GENERAL ELECTION HELD ON MAY 14, 2011, FOR THE PURPOSE OF ELECTING THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL MEMBERS OF THE CITY OF FORT WORTH. WHEREAS, on February 15, 2011, the City Council of the City of Fort Worth adopted Ordinance No. 19554-02-2011, later amended by Ordinance Nos. 19640-04-2011, 19664 -04 -2011 and 19673 -05 -2011, calling for and ordering a general election to be held on Saturday, May 14, 2011, at which election all qualified voters of the City of Fort Worth would have the opportunity to vote for the purpose of electing a Mayor at large and eight (8) Council Members from their respective districts; and WHEREAS, on May 14, 2011, a general election was held at which the qualified voters of the City had the opportunity to vote for the purpose of electing the Mayor and Council Members of the City of Fort Worth; and WHEREAS, pursuant to Chapter 67, of the Texas Election Code, the City Council of the City of Fort Worth is required to canvass the returns and declare the results of the election; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT WORTH: SECTION 1. That the declarations and findings contained in the preamble of this Resolution are hereby found to be true and correct and shall be made a part hereof. SECTION 2. That the City Council hereby finds and declares that the election for Mayor and Council Members of the City of Fort Worth was held on May 14, 2011, at which election qualified voters were given the opportunity to vote for the purpose of electing the Mayor and Council Members of the City of Fort Worth. SECTION 3. That the City Council further finds and declares that no ballots were cast in Parker County. 0- WO TI MA Resolution No. 3987 -05 -2011 SECTION 5. That the City Council further finds and declares that such returns are correct, and adopts them as the returns of the election held on May 14, 2011, together with the tabulation of the total number of votes received in each precinct. Attached hereto as Exhibit "A" and incorporated herein are the Mayor and Council election results of Tarrant County. Attached hereto as Exhibit "B" and incorporated herein are the Mayor and Council election results of Denton County. Attached hereto as Exhibit "C" and incorporated herein are the Mayor and Council election results of Parker County. SECTION 6. That the following persons be declared elected to the office of Mayor and City Council, respectively: Council — District 2 Salvador "Sal" Espino Council — District 3 W.B. "Zim" Zimmerman Council — District 4 Danny Scarth Council — District 5 Frank Moss Council — District 6 Jungus Jordan Council — District 8 Kathleen Hicks Council — District 9 Joel Burns SECTION 7. That the City Council further finds no candidate received a majority of the total number of votes received by all candidates for the office of Mayor and the office of City Council District 7 and that no candidate be declared elected to Mayor and City Council District 7. Therefore, in accordance with Chapter W, Section 2, of the City of Fort Worth Home Rule Charter, a runoff election is hereby declared necessary to fill these places on the Council and a runoff election will be ordered by separate action of the Council. SECTION 8. That it is hereby officially found and determined that the meeting of the Fort Worth City Council at which this Resolution was adopted was open to the public, and that public notice of the time, place and purpose of said meeting was given, as required by Chapter 551 of the Texas Government Code. SECTION 9. That this Resolution shall take effect uponon on this 24"' day of May, 2011. APPROVED AS TO FORM AND LEGALITY: Sarah J.
