HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 5051-02-2019A Resolution NO. 5051-02-2019 ENDORSING THE CITY OF FORT WORTH EDUCATION INITIATIVE ACTION PLAN WHEREAS, the City of Fort Worth recognizes the importance of grade level reading, especially 3rd grade reading as a contributing factor towards a thriving economy; and WHEREAS, the City of Fort Worth was a catalyst in establishing Read Fort Wmth as a backbone organization leading a collective impact effort to mobilize early education providers to align program goals to increase the number of students able to read at grade level; and WHEREAS, this effort, known community -wide as 100 X 2025, was designed to assure that by 2025, 100% of third grade students in the Fort Worth Independent School District will be reading at grade level; and WHEREAS, the City of Fort W01th embraces this community goal and created a Director of Education Strategies position to develop and implement an Education Initiative Action Plan; and WHEREAS, a team of community members and staff worked for a year developing an Action Plan which was presented to the Fort Worth City Council on February 5, 2019; and WHEREAS, the Action Plan outlines the role of the City of Fort Worth as a partner in public education by applying best practices for literacy and reading instruction to existing departmental programs, beginning summer 2019; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT WORTH, TEXAS, THAT: 1. The City Council endorses the attached Education Initiative Action Plan as presented at the February 5, 2019 City Council work session; and 2. The City Council requests that the City Manager use this Action Plan as a guide for the City's efforts to improve reading levels among students in the Fort Worth Independent School. District.
