Citizens should have multiple ways to receive warning. A NOAA All Hazards Weather Radio is highly recommended by the Office of Emergency Management as citizens will get automatic and timely information directly from the National Weather Service (NWS). Citizens can also register for alerts by signing up at Nixle at nixle.com or by texting their zipcode to 888777. NWS Tornado Warning are automatically rebroadcasted to those registered for Nixle. For Spanish captioned and verbal alerts, citizens canregister at http://ftw.ahasalerts.com/ES/Register.aspx. For access or functional need residents who are Deaf/deaf, hard of hearing or blind, citizens can register for the Accessible Hazard Alerts System (AHAS) at http://ftw.ahasalerts.com. OEM can activate all, quadrant sectioned, or select sirens of the outdoor warning system to provide alerts to people who are outdoors for several natural or manmade incidents. Severe Weather criteria for activation of the outdoor warning siren system include: A tornado warning has been issued for Fort Worth by the National Weather Service Winds of 70 miles per hour or stronger are occurring A State or Federal disaster has been issued OEM Duty Officer discretion. Upon receiving warning, citizens should take cover in a sturdy structure and tune in to local news for more information. Know Where to Go. When Sheltering from a Tornado: Quickly move to a basement and bring an emergency supply kit. If there is no basement, move to an interior room or closet with no windows and close all doors. Put as many walls between you and the outside as possible. Many fatalities from tornadoes are due to trauma to the head, so find ways to protect yourself either with a helmet, under a sturdy table, mattress, etc. Top floor rooms DO NOT protect you. Exterior rooms and rooms with windows DO NOT protect you. NO PLACE OUTSIDE is safe from a tornado.
