SUBJECT:
Authorize the City Manager to Execute a Contract Extension with Safety, Environmental and
Engineering Solutions, Inc., for Occupational Safety Training
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the City Council authorize the City Manager to execute a contract extension with
Safety, Environmental and Engineering Solutions, Inc., to extend the contract to December 31, 2007.
DISCUSSION:
On May 23, 2006, (M&C C-21468) the City Council awarded Safety, Environmental and Engineering
Solutions, Inc., (SEES), a contract to provide occupational safety training for the City's managers and
supervisors (M&C C-21468) at a cost of $81,000. A series of educational training classes were scheduled
and completed during the period October 26, 2006 through June 29, 2007. A total of 1,048 employees of all
City departments have received training on safety and accident prevention, and federal Occupational Safety
and Health Standards. SEES has fulfilled its obligations under City Secretary Contract No. 33779 to provide
occupational safety and accident prevention training to City managers and supervisors.
However, approximately 466 directors, managers and supervisors, including 216 officers of the Fire
Department, were unable to attend the scheduled training sessions. Accordingly, the Occupational Health
and Safety Division desires to provide 18 specific classes for Fire Department officers and 5 make-up
classes for other department managers and supervisors in order to achieve 100 percent training compliance
for all department directors, managers and supervisors. The total cost of these classes plus printing
expenses is $17,900.
