SUBJECT: AQUATICS PROGRAM UPDATE: ACCESS TO PRIVATE POOLS,
USE OF YMCA FACILITIES AND CONTINGENCY PROGRAM PLANNING
The purpose of this report is to update the City Council on the status of staffs research to identify
any opportunities for the City to partner with privately owned swimming facilities for use by the
public, particularly in the northern sector of the city. Outlined below are the results of the
exploration into opportunities.
Former Clark-Nowlin YMCA (Basswood Blvd. @ Park Vista Blvd.) ---This facility is now owned by
the Boy Scouts and is not available for use at this time.
Private Homeowner Association (HOA) Pools— Staff has developed a questionnaire and
distributed it to the HOA presidents via email through the Community Relations Department. The
query requests that the HOA submit a response to questions regarding the potential for
partnership with the City of Fort Worth. Once responses are received, staff will evaluate the
responses to determine feasibility of a partnership. Staff will update the City Council as the
project progresses.
Previously, a partnership was developed to utilize four YMCA facilities. The following provides
attendance figures during the first weekend of use, June 5 and 6, 2010, that the pools were
opened to the general public from 2-4pm each day.
McDonald Community YMCA— 7 (Saturday only, closed on Sunday)
Eastside YMCA- 35
E.R. Van Zandt Southwest YMCA - 47
Westside YMCA— 34
Staff will also continue to outline alternative program plans in the event that it becomes necessary
to cease or restrict operations at Forest Park pool due to the condition of the pool liner.
