NUMBEr 1/31/77 G-3308 Department Personnel iof 1
The City Council approved in the 1975-76 budget a reorganization of Fire
Prevention and Fire Dispatch Divisions of the Fire Department. To realize
certain measures of efficiency and economy the Council approved the deletion
of seven Fire Captain positions and the creation of seven positions of lower
rank to replace those positions. At the time of implementation, the Council
decided to delete the Fire Captain positions through attrition so that no
incumbent personnel would be adversely affected. Three of the seven Fire
Captain positions are now vacant (as of January 31, 1977) and need to be
replaced with three Fire Private positions in order to begin phasing in the
reorganization plan.
A provision in the Firemen's and Policemen's Civil Service Statute, Article
1269m; Section 8, states that the City Council "shall prescribed by ordinance
the number of positions of each classification" of all firemen and policemen.
Therefore, to be consistent faith the provisions of Article 1269m, it is
necessary to amend the number of Fire Captain positions and Fire Private
positions by ordinance.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the City Council approve an ordinance amending the
autbarized, peraanneL:3n the Fire Department by'dkldfing -three Fire Captain
positions and adding three Fire Private positions:
