Fort Worth is not untouched by tragedy. Statistics reveal that when this device is properly installed and maintained, it is likely the best and most affordable early warning system for fires in the home. In our City and around the country, children and the elderly are most often the victims of fire. The Fort Worth Fire Department, through its Bureau of Fire Prevention, has initiated several direct assistance programs as well as partnering with a number of agencies to get the message and the product — smoke detectors — into the homes of all residents. A special emphasis has been placed on those programs that impact these groups most directly. The following is a list of previous and on-going programs aimed at providing or ensuring the presence of smoke detectors in all homes and sleeping areas. Those programs listed in bold are those designed or intended to protect our most vulnerable citizens. Some Fire Department directed programs are: • Fire Code mandated inspections at night shelters, hotels, dormitories, etc. • Incident related citizen contacts where firefighters observe a need for smoke detectors • Smoke detector drives by our Fire Safety Education group in neighborhoods proximal to injury/fatality fires • Citizen's Fire Academy training sessions (for a volunteer assistance corps) • Fire Safety Education group presentations at churches, neighborhood association meetings, street fairs, etc. • Media releases (including City web page) for reminders on smoke detector maintenance Some successful partnerships: • Fort Worth ISD - Learn Not To Burn curriculum stressing fire safety and smoke detector upkeep • Meals on Wheels — Partnered and donated smoke detectors to FWFD (2008) and still sends referrals as needed • Liberty Mutual —donated smoke alarms and volunteered for the Citizen Corp smoke alarm drive in 2009 • Energizer Battery— donates several cases of batteries each year • Kidde —donated 100 smoke alarms in 2006 • City departments — annual Cowtown Brush-up • Red Cross — smoke detector drives • Code Compliance— (Hillside Blitz) • Glencrest Civic League — currently submitting names as needed ISSUED BY THE CITY MANAGER FORT WORTH, TEXAS INFORMAL REPORT TO CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS N09231 ,► *E+., To the Mayor and Members of the City Council Page 2 of 3 April 20, 2010 a r r SUBJECT: UPDATE ON SMOKE DETECTORS Projected Initiatives/Partnerships: • Smoke detector maintenance/fire safety inserts in water bill mail-outs • MedStar incident/citizen contact referrals • Tarrant County Adult Protective Services referrals Dale A.
