ASSIGNING PORTIONS OF STATE HIGHWAY 183 (A/K/A NE AND NW
28TH STREET)FROM BEACH STREET TO BUSINESS 287(A/K/A NORTH
MAIN STREET) IN RECOGNITION OF CESAR CHAVEZ AND STATE
HIGHWAY 183 (A/K/A NW 28TH STREET AND EPHRIHAM AVENUE)
FROM BUSINESS 287 (A/K/A NORTH MAIN STREET) TO STATE
HIGHWAY 199 IN RECOGNITION OF DOLORES HUERTA
WHEREAS Cesar Chavez was a renowned labor and civil rights leader, a United States
Navy veteran, and co-founder of the National Farmworkers Association which later became the
United Farmworkers Union, and a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom; and
WHEREAS Dolores Huerta is a renowned labor and civil rights leader, co-founder of the
National Farmworkers Association which later became the United Farmworkers Union, a
champion of women's rights, an advocate for workers to earn living wages and a recipient of the
Presidential Medal of Freedom; and
WHEREAS the City of Fort Worth's vision is to become the most livable and best
managed city in the country in part by building strong neighborhoods, providing safe and healthy
communities, and embracing the values of diversity, equity and mutual respect throughout our
city; and
WHEREAS the City of Fort Worth wishes to honor the legacies of Cesar Chavez and
Dolores Huerta and their national contributions to the Latino community and the world in
promoting and supporting labor reforms, human rights, civil rights, women's rights, equity and
diversity; and
WHEREAS the City of Fort Worth acknowledges the past and current efforts of the Cesar
Chavez Committee and the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAQ to have
recognition for Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta for their service, advocacy and leadership for
workers, immigrants, and women's rights; and
WHEREAS Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta have helped build a foundation for
establishing community organizing, environmentalism, civil rights, activism and education in
Texas and throughout the United States; and
WHEREAS State Highway 183 is an important east-west arterial in the City of Fort Worth
from the city limits at Beach Street on the east to the city limits at State Highway 199 on the west,
and is the gateway to the Historic Stockyards and several Fort Worth neighborhoods with strong
Latino communities;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF FORT WORTH, TEXAS, THAT:
For their collective efforts to build a foundation for establishing community organizing,
environmentalism, civil rights, activism and education in Texas and throughout the United
States:
1. State Highway 183 (a/k/a NE and NW 28ih Street) from Beach Street to Business
287(a/k/a North Main Street) is hereby designated in recognition of Cesar Chavez,
as depicted on the attached map;
2. State Highway 183 (a/k/a NW 281h Street and Ephriham Avenue) from Business
287 (a/k/a North Main Street) to State Highway 199 is hereby designated in
recognition of Dolores Huerta, as depicted on the attached map;
3. The City Manager is authorized to take all appropriate measures in conjunction with
the Texas Department of Transportation to effect this recognition.
