HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 5182-01-2020 A Resolution NO. 5182-01-2020 SUPPORTING EFFORTS TO ELIMINATE THE USE OF E-CIGARETTES,VAPING AND OTHER TOBACCO PRODUCTS BY TEENS WHEREAS, after decades of decline in teen cigarette smoking rates we have seen a recent dramatic rise in the use of e-cigarettes by children and teens leading to a new generation of tobacco products addicting a new generation of users to tobacco and nicotine; and WHEREAS, one in four teens are using e-cigarettes and one vape pod contains as much addictive nicotine as a pack of cigarettes; and WHEREAS, ninety percent of adult smokers first try a tobacco product by age 18 and the tobacco industry, including the e-cigarette companies, spend billions marketing directly to teens; and WHEREAS, the short-term and long-term health risks to teens using e-cigarettes are still being revealed and recently have been linked to deaths and serious respiratory illnesses requiring hospitalization; and WHEREAS, the City of Fort Worth is committed to prioritizing the health and well-being of individuals and families; and WHEREAS, the City Council supports the expanded effort of the Fort Worth Independent School District and all area school districts in efforts to raise awareness of this growing teen health crisis; and their efforts to end all tobacco and nicotine addiction. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT WORTH, TEXAS, THAT: 1. That the City of Fort Worth will support all school district efforts to ensure that e-cigarettes and vaping are fully addressed in a manner that focuses on improving health outcomes for every child in every school in our community; and 2. That we call on our community to support efforts to eliminate tobacco use by teens and achieve the goal of assuring our youth have the opportunity to live a longer, healthier life in a city committed to prioritizing health and well-being for all.
