Adopt the attached appropriation ordinance increasing estimated receipts and appropriations in the Special Trust Fund, Texas StateTechnical Institute Firefighter Apprenticeship Program in the amount of $8,000.00 from available funds. DISCUSSION: The United States Department of Labor, Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training provides funds for local apprenticeship training and on- the -job programs. In Texas, the Firefighter Apprenticeship Program is funded through the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and is administered locally by Tarrant County College. The intent of the program is to teach a set of standardized skills to firefighters across the county. The Fire Department is an authorized apprenticeship training facility and, therefore, part of the standard training that Fort Worth provides its recruits allows the Department to receive these funds. Funding is based on the number of enrollees in the program and contact hours received by each enrollee. Approved expenditures of apprenticeship funds include instructors' salaries, instructional materials/ supplies, instructional equipment, rental, office supplies, postage and travel. The Fire Department will use these funds mainly to purchase instructional equipment for use in delivering training programs. The Fire Department enrolls all newly trained firefighters in the three -year program after their graduation from the Fire Department Training Academy. Each participant is required to complete a written lesson and become proficient in a particular firefighting skill each month of the three -year lesson cycle. The lessons and skills are taught by each fire station officer and each participant is evaluated every six months by Training Academy staff. FISCAL INFORMATION / CERTIFICATION: The Financial Management Services Director certifies that upon approval of the above recommendations and adoption of the attached appropriation ordinance, funds will be available in the current operating budget, as appropriated, of the Special Trust Fund, Texas StateTechnical Institute Firefighter Logname: 36TSTI0612 Page 1 of 2 Apprenticeship Program.
