Subject: Update on the Proposed Revisions to Junk Vehicle Ordinance
Fallowing a presentation to City Council on proposed changes to the Junk Vehicle Ordinance, staff was
asked to look at best practices from other Texas cities, publish the proposed changes and conduct a
public meeting.
Summary:
• Attachment "A" is a summary of the proposed changes.
• Staff posted these changes on the intemet, distributed them to neighborhood associations and
outlined them in a City Page article. Staff also conducted a public meeting.
• As a result of these communications, staff received input from citizens. All were in support of the
changes.
• Staff also conducted a best practice survey of other Texas cities. Fort Worth and San Antonio
were the only two cities that have adopted definitions that are more inclusive than the State
Statute. San Antonio was the only city that has adopted a definition that includes provisions for the
consideration of any adjacent privately owned /occupied property in enforcement actions. All other
cities use the visible from a public right of way as the delineation for a violation.
Next Step:
Staff will bring these changes back to City Council in the form of an ordinance revision. Should you have
any questions regarding this matter, please contact Brandon Bennett, Code Compliance Department
Director, at (817) 392 -6322.
