HomeMy WebLinkAboutIR 8943INFORMAL REPORT TO CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS No. 8943 To the Mayor and Members of the City Council Date: May 20, 2008 s-',*% Page 1 Of 2 5 SUBJECT: FIRST QUARTER REPORT ON OVERTIME WORKED IN 2008 The Human Resources Department tracks the amount of overtime worked by City employees to monitor the effectiveness of procedures implemented to control overtime costs in City Departments. Per Council direction, a summary of the overtime activity for the three departments with the highest use of overtime will be provided on a quarterly basis. The first report you received was for third quarter 2007. Due to a reporting oversight, we did not provide a report for fourth quarter 2007. Additionally, due to the need to evaluate the effectiveness of our reporting method and the need to coordinate this effort among the various departments we are just now providing the first quarter 2008 data. The next report we provide will include the second quarter 2008. Following is a summary of the key findings of the first quarter 2008 overtime analysis: CITY WIDE: y he cumulative overtime hours for the first quarter of 2008 compared to the first quarter of 2007 for all w ity employees have decreased by 11.6% from the previous year. The cumulative overtime dollars for the same period have decreased by 13.6°/x. POLICE: The cumulative first quarter overtime hours for all employees in the Police Department have increased by 2.3% over the first quarter of the previous year. However, total cumulative dollars have decreased by 3.5% compared to the first quarter of 2007. The increase in hours is due to a 19.3% increase in overtime by non -civil service employees in the department. FIRE The cumulative first quarter overtime hours for all employees in the Fire Department have decreased by 23.5% over the previous year. Cumulative dollars have decreased by 33% over the previous year. There were no Medstar overtime hours reported in the first quarter of 2007 and only 32 Medstar overtime hours reported in the first quarter 2008. G lyIa The cumulative first quarter overtime hours for Water Department employees have decreased by 17.5% compared to the first quarter of 2007. Cumulative overtime dollars for Water have decreased 20.02% for e same period. Cumulative overtime dollars have increased 62.09% for the same period. Attached is a chart illustrating the first quarter *07 and '08 overtime comparisons for Police, Fire, Water and Municipal Court departments.
