At the request of the City Council, City staff has prepared this update on the Hyde Park Transit Plaza
project, which includes intersection improvements at Ninth and Throckmorton Streets.
Proiect Background
The proposed Hyde Park Transit Plaza at the intersection of Ninth and Throckmorton Streets is a
collaborative effort by the City, the Fort Worth Transportation Authority (the T), the U.S. General Services
Administration (GSA) and Downtown Fort Worth, Inc. The Hyde Park and Ninth Street Advisory
Committee, chaired by Councilmember Wendy Davis, oversees the project.
Hyde Park was originally conceptualized during the 1999 study of the Intermodal Transportation
Center. The study recommended dispersing bus transfer activity throughout Downtown and identified
Hyde Park at the intersection • Ninth and Throckmorton Streets as the most promising location for a
transit plaza. Since 1999, the City, The T, GSA and Downtown Fort Worth, Inc., have worked together to
secure funding and to design the proposed transit plaza. In May 2006, The T purchased the parking lot at
the northeast comer of Throckmorton and Ninth Streets that is integral to the transit plaza design.
After evaluating circulation options for the Hyde Park Transit Plaza, the City's Downtown Access and
Circulation Study Committee (DACS) recommended improving the intersection of
9th/1 Oth/Throckmorton/Jennings Streets, and narrowing Throckmorton Street from four to three lanes. The
transit plaza design improves pedestrian circulation for transit riders walking to or from the plaza by
simplifying the confusing and dangerous 9th/lOth/Throckmorton/Jennings Streets intersection. By
realigning Ninth Street between Throckmorton and Houston Streets into a T-intersection, pedestrian safety
and transit access is enhanced, and an attractive public gathering place is created. Page 2 and 3 include
an existing conditions map and the proposed transit plaza design.
Construction
Construction of the transit plaza, including the realignment of Ninth Street, is expected to begin the first
quarter of 2008 and should be completed within one year. Ninth Street between Throckmorton and
Houston Streets will be closed during construction. Traffic will be rerouted north on Throckmorton to
Seventh Street and south on Houston to Eleventh Street. The anticipated construction schedule is below.
