SUBJECT: FREEWAY LIGHTING PROGRAM
fY'b
This Informal Report is to respond to Council's request for additional information about the
Freeway Lighting Program.
Republic Electric commenced work on the freeway lighting maintenance agreement in March.
Since that time staff has not been pleased with the progress of work. In order to try to get the
project back on track, staff met with the contractor on August 9t'. The contractor told staff that
he has struggled hiring qualified electricians, but that he recently hired a new superintendent,
who in turn has purchased additional bucket tracks and hired an additional crew -- they now
have two crews working on the freeway lighting system.
In the meeting, Republic Electric agreed that they would focus their crews for the rest of
August on sweeping the city freeways replacing lamps that are out, picking -up knocked down
poles, and flagging areas with cable shorts for subsequent follow -up work. In September,
they will work on relamping high mast poles and re- setting knocked down poles. Once that is
completed, they will start monthly lamp replacement patrols and start going back to replacing
shorted cable and bad conduit.
We will be getting monthly progress reports from the contractor. If their performance has not
improved as expected, we will initiate all measures accorded us in the contract. We will
provide the City Council an update by mid - September.
