HomeMy WebLinkAboutIR 8759The purpose • this report is to provide the City Council with information pertaining to the 2006 population
estimates released recently by the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG). According
• these estimates, Fort Worth's population grew • 37,000, • six percent, from 624,850 on January 1,
2005, to 661,850 • January 1, 2006, This represents a 24 percent increase since the 2000 Census. The
chart in Attachment A depicts Fort Worth's population growth since 2000.
Attachment B depicts the location of housing starts by planning sector during 2005. Building permit data
suggest that approximately 45 percent of the 2005 population growth occurred in the Far North sector.
Another 16 percent occurred in the Far Northwest sector, followed by seven percent in the Far South
sector. Approximately 13 percent of the growth occurred in the central city.
While the population growth in Fort Worth is primarily attributable to new single-family housing
construction, increases in multifamily occupancy rates are also a factor. The occupancy rates increased
during 2005 for various reasons, including the arrival of many Gulf Coast residents displaced by
hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
