BACKGROUND
A functional site -specific installation comprised of two benches and sidewalk created from Sunset Texas
Red Granite sited in the Fort Worth Botanic Garden north of the rose garden and south of the Garden's
restaurant. Cut from the polished granite the benches are to be shaped in a curvilinear pattern to follow the
natural plant line of the site. The thermal -finished granite sidewalk features inlays of polished granite -
matching the benches - which replicate the shadow pattern created by sun shining through the leaves during
the spring and summer seasons. The artist expressed consideration for the exposed root system of the
nearby oak tree

This mural uses symbol painting to tell the history of the City of Fort Worth and charmingly
mirrors the WPA created ceramic the murals on the Coliseum and Auditorium buildings at the
Will Rogers Memorial Center which narrate a similar city history but in a figurative style. Painted
on the rear of the library facing southeast and overlooking downtown Fort Worth, the mural
makes an impressive appearance when approaching from the south entrance on Central Park
Boulevard.

ARTIST: Stuart Gentling
TITLE: Untitled
DATE: 1975

LOCATION: 1111 Monroe Street
South Fagade facing Lancaster Avenue
BACKGROUND
The Zipper Mural was originally designed by Mr. Gentling in 1975 as part of Painted Spaces Inc.,
a non-profit organization composed of Fort Worth citizens that organized collaborations between
The Fort Worth chamber of Commerce, the Fort Worth Art Museum, local artists, architects and
businessmen, to bring revitalization to downtown Fort Worth. The south wall of the Williamson-
Ackie Manufacturing Company was painted a khaki color with the addition of the zipper
partially unzipped to reveal a blue skyscape. The theme referred to the type of clothing produced
by the Company; the mural included the company's logo on the zipper pull. The last remaining
mural of the Painted Spaces program, the Zipper Mural has become something of a landmark in
downtown Fort Worth.
Gentling was in contract negotiations to restore the mural, replacing the cloud scene with a new
conceptual rendering, at the time of his death.
In 2007, Gentling's sister Suzanne Gentling, was commissioned to design a new image for the
opening in the landmark Zipper Mural. Part tribute and part reference, the design pays homage to
her brother. Art Placement Services completed the restoration. Ms. Gentling was a key team
member and advisor.
