(Sharkey) Stovall has served the City of Fort Worth as a member of the City Council and as Mayor for the past twelve years and has served longer than any other elected official since the City was first chartered in 1873; and, WHEREAS, the Fort Worth Star Telegram, Sunday, March 9. 1975, recognized Mayor Stovall's devotion to the duties of Mayor, his abilities and many of his accomplishments in an editorial, as follows: Thank you, mayor R. M. "Sharkey" Stovall is a worker. Has been since he was 10, when he worked for the city park department under auspices of the National Youth Administration. Fine job, that one. Paid him 40 cents an hour. He also threw a paper route, was a soda jerk, filled orders at a department store, worked in a warehouse, delivered and sold office supplies. Finally, he went into business for himself and that's when the work really started. Then, a dozen years ago, he got back on the city "payroll" by getting himself elected to City Council. Pay: $10 weekly. Then a half dozen years ago he got himself elected mayor. His hours of work on behalf of the city increased but the pay was the same. Mayor Stovall - aw, let's call him Sharkey, since everybody else does. the nickname coming from the name of fighter Jack Sharkey - devoted many, many more hours to city business than even the most demanding among us might have expected of a mayor. One of our astute reporters called him the "live-in mayor." While he served the city, the new airport opened, we got a new city hall, branch libraries went into operation, police and fire department improvements were made, a new water treatment plant opened, a human resources department was formed. There's more, of course. When he lays aside his gavel next month, Sharkey intends to remain active in public affairs to serve the community whe .OFFEJ''';1 RECORD ever he can. CITY SECRET RY Thanks, mayor, for what you've done in years gone by and FT. WDRUil, TEX. for the contributions we know you will make in years to come. WHEREAS, "Sharkey" did not choose to run for re-election to the office of Mayor and his term of office will expire upon election of a new mayor in April: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FORT WORTH: That thanks and appreciation be expressed to "Sharkey"' for his long service as Councilman and Mayor of the City of Fort Worth, for his untiring efforts on behalf of Fort Worth and its citizens, and for taking the lead in a large major- ity of the accomplishments of the City during his tenure as an elective official. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this resolution be spread upon the minutes of the City Council as a permanent record thereof. Adopted April 7, 1975.
