DISCUSSION: Bank of America created a Student Leaders Program through their Neighborhood Excellence Initiatives Program. Along with the Volunteer Center of North Texas, Bank of America provides internship opportunities for teenagers who have demonstrated a clear interest in the crucial issues facing communities today and who have a strong desire to help build and sustain vibrant neighborhoods for tomorrow. This summer, the City of Fort Worth's Environmental Management Department (DEM) was chosen as one of 10 locations to host an intern because of our involvement with the communities and general public. Diana Serrano, a high school Senior from Northside High School in Fort Worth, spent 8 weeks with us working with DEM to receive hands-on experience in areas such as professional development and community outreach. Diana was a valuable asset to the DEM team, and we were able to prepare her for a successful future in a professional and community-based environment. As part of the program, Bank of America allotted $10,000 for each student and their host organization. Diana was paid biweekly during her internship and after the internship is completed, the remaining money is given as an award to the host organization. This is Bank of America's way of thanking the host organization for their efforts in providing a positive learning experience. The City of Fort Worth was honored by receiving a $2,000 Bank of America Student Leader Award which will be used to fund community outreach and education. FISCAL INFORMATION/CERTIFICATION: The Finance Director certifies that upon approval of the above recommendations and adoption of the attached supplemental appropriation ordinance, funds will be available in the current operating budget, as appropriated, of the Environmental Management Fund.. The Department of Environmental Management will be responsible for the collection and deposit of the funds.
