HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 400 A Resolution USOLM017 FILE NO. / o A RESOLUTION FAVORING EXTENSION OF CIVIL SERVICE PROBATIONARY PERIOD FROM SIX MONTHS TO TWELVE MONTHS WHEREAS, Section 12 of Article 1269m of the Revised Civil Statutes of Texas requires fire and police employees to serve a six month probationary period before acquiring full civil service protection; and, WHEREAS, these fire and police employees are entrusted with the safety and well-being of the citizens; and, WHEREAS, it is incumbent upon the City to insure that employees are able to meet the challenges of their ,jobs; and, WHEREAS, the technical nature of police and fire work is such that police officers and firefighters are still learning and essentially undergoing field training during the initial months of employment; and, WHEREAS, firefighters work only about sixty (60) days during six month period; and, WHEREAS, police officers must be able to handle interpersonal relationships in order to be good officers; and, WHEREAS, under the above described circumstances, six months is an insufficient length of time in which to observe and evaluate an individual to determine if he has the necessary fiber to become a fireman or policeman enjoying the full benefits of Civil Service protection; NOW THEREFORE LET IT BE RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Fort Worth endorses House Bill 62 as it proposes to amend Section 12 of Article 1269m to require a twelve (12) month proba- tionary period for those individuals appointed to a position in ` fire and police departments governed by the Firemen's and Policemen's Civil Service Act.
