It is recommended that the City Council authorize the execution of a contract with the Boys and Girls
Clubs of Greater Fort Worth in the amount of $307,015.00 for the operation of the Safe Haven Youth
Program -Martin located at 3123 Avenue G.
DISCUSSION:
The original Safe Haven Program was first operated in the near Southeast part of Fort Worth and we
later expanded to other designated sites in Fort Worth. Youth Safe Havens are places where
children in targeted neighborhoods play and learn with other children without the fear of being a
victim of crime. The Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Fort Worth provides a Youth Safe Haven
Program for youth living within a five -mile radius of the Safe Haven -Martin Boys and Girls Club
located at 3123 Avenue G
The program provides youth with quality programs in character/leadership, educational activities,
cultural arts, health/life skills and recreation, which serves as a crime prevention tool. Program staff
addresses additional educational, social, psychological and physical needs youth may
experience. The program's focus and goal is to change lives by caring for the "whole child." This
approach provides youth the tools they need to become responsible adults.
Since October 9, 2001, through fiscal year 2013, the City Council has authorized the execution of
contracts with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Fort Worth to provide Crime Control Prevention
District funds for the operation of the Youth Safe Haven Program. This Mayor and Council
Communication will authorize a contract to continue the program through Fiscal Year 20'14.
This contract shall not be effective until October 1, 2013 and the City shall not be obligated to make
any payments under this contract until the Fiscal Year 2014 budget becomes effective.
Safe Haven -Martin is located in COUNCIL DISTRICT 8.
